How New England Is Assisting Puerto Rico In Aftermath Of Hurricanes

Montana's Whitefish Energy blasted Yulin Cruz after she said their no-bid contract to repair the island's power gird should be "voided" and a more transparent process should take place.

Brown University is enrolling up to 50 students from the University of Puerto Rico tuition free following the destruction of Hurricane Maria. The secretary's office and Whitefish deny that the alleged link lead to the contract.

Cruz also demanded to know why the company thought her demand for transparency was "misplaced." Whitefish is a 2-year-old company that has never coordinated a major grid restoration.

Cohen spoke with Vermont Edition to update us on what he's seen.

We started with a status update. These plucky little entrepreneurs managed to fortuitously land a $300 million deal to rebuild the electrical infrastructure in Puerto Rico. "We find her comments to be very disappointing and demoralizing to the hundreds of people on our team that have left their homes and families and have come here to help the people of Puerto Rico". A June/July survey of Central Florida residents of Puerto Rican descent by GOP pollster Jan van Lohuizen found that two-thirds support statehood for Puerto Rico, including 76 percent of Republicans. Did you bring any linemen or working crews from Flathead Valley in Montana?

U.S. aid to the island commonwealth has been slow in reaching those affected by these storms.

On Wednesday, Whitefish fired back with a statement on Twitter. The banks should be letting people roll rooftop panels into their mortgages, but there aren't many financial instruments for homeowners in this regard. Her 52-seat restaurant hasn't been open for weeks. The whole island is suffering one way or another. Business is terribly slow, and they're praying people start coming back. It's not slow because of what we're doing, it's slow because other people aren't here.

"This appears to be a pretty small company", said Alaska Republican Sen.

Today's meter level is lower than yesterday's. He and his wife and son and daughter-in-law had planned to go to San Juan as part-work, part-vacation for his 60th birthday next month. For smaller eateries like gastropub Gallo Negro, it's hard to pay the cost of diesel for generators, said Chef Maria Grubb.

NO: You've told other outlets that Whitefish CEO Andy Techmanski does not have a close relationship with Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke. Is there any basis for someone to make a conclusion like that?

On Tuesday, top Democrats on the natural resources committees in both the House and Senate asked for a review of the Whitefish contract.

NO: Was this a bidding process?

An Oklahoma-based fracking company announced last week it had also signed a contract with PREPA. Musk replied that he'd be "happy" to chat and hoped "Tesla can be helpful".

CC: I don't have that information handy. Ares moved to the the early 1990s.

A request for an interview Wednesday with Techmanski was declined by Whitefish Energy's spokesman.

This contract is a public document. The tiny Montana-based company had only two full-time employees when Maria hit, according to the Washington Post.

"PREPA has made clear it is not equipped for the enormous task of quickly restoring the Island's power", Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) said in a statement, using the acronym for the utility.
